Bone marrow

Bone Marrow aspiration site

  • Iliac Crest: This is the most preferred site in children. It is performed at 1 cm below the posterior iliac crest.
  • Tibia: At upper end of tibia, just below tibial tuberosity on its medial aspect in infants
  • Sternum: It should be used in children beyond 7 to 8 years of age. Manubrium sterni can be used 1 cm above sternomanubrial angle, slightly to one side of the midline.
  • Rarely, lumbar spinous processes may be used
